Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing

(EMDR) in Wilmington NC and across NC via telehealth

Are there experiences that continue to show up in your thoughts, emotions, or body in ways that feel hard to control?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based therapy that was originally developed to treat trauma and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Research has also shown EMDR to be effective in treating anxiety, depression, grief, painful life experiences, and patterns that continue to impact relationships and self-worth.

Many people seek EMDR when they find themselves feeling "stuck." They may understand logically that they are safe, capable, or worthy, yet their emotions and nervous system continue to respond as though old experiences are still happening. EMDR helps the brain process these experiences so they no longer hold the same emotional intensity.

How Does EMDR Work?

EMDR uses dual focus through eye movements, tapping, or auditory tones to engage the brain's natural ability to process and heal from difficult experiences.

Our brains are naturally designed to heal, much like our bodies heal from physical injuries. Most experiences are processed and stored in a way that allows us to learn from them without becoming overwhelmed by them. However, traumatic or highly distressing experiences can sometimes become "stuck" in the nervous system.

When this happens, reminders of the original experience can continue to trigger anxiety, fear, shame, sadness, or other intense emotional reactions. Even when we know we are safe, our nervous system may continue responding as though danger is present.

EMDR helps the brain reprocess these experiences so they can be stored in a more adaptive way. Clients often report that the memory remains, but the emotional charge surrounding it decreases. They are able to remember what happened without feeling overwhelmed by it.

Building a Strong Foundation for Healing

At Upchurch Counseling, EMDR is not simply about processing difficult memories. We believe that lasting healing occurs when clients have the internal resources necessary to navigate challenging emotions throughout the process.

Before and during EMDR treatment, we often incorporate:

  • Attachment-focused resourcing

  • Internal Family Systems (IFS)-informed techniques

  • Mindfulness practices

  • Distress tolerance skills

  • Emotional regulation strategies

  • Self-compassion and self-soothing techniques

These approaches help create a greater sense of safety and stability while supporting the healing process.

What Can EMDR Help With?

EMDR may be helpful for:

  • Trauma and PTSD

  • Childhood wounds and attachment injuries

  • Anxiety and panic

  • Depression

  • Grief and loss

  • Relationship difficulties

  • Negative beliefs about self-worth

  • Disturbing memories that continue to affect daily life

  • Life transitions and stressful experiences

What Does Healing Through EMDR Feel Like?

While every person's experience is unique, many clients describe feeling more connected to themselves, less reactive to triggers, and more capable of responding rather than reacting to life's challenges.

As healing occurs, clients often experience:

  • Greater emotional balance

  • Increased self-compassion

  • Improved relationships

  • Reduced anxiety and distress

  • A stronger sense of confidence and resilience

  • More peace and presence in daily life
